Estes 1960 Nova Payloader Flying Model Rocket Kit Review
The Nova Payloader what you might consider a starter payloader rocket. You get the payload section but don't need the bigger engines or launch equipment to get it up.Overview
The Nova is a little bit more complicated than other rockets as you have to deal with the payload section and the unusal fin design. The fins are cut balsa and come off easily enough from their stock. You'll want to sand them down. Each fin is two parts, the big part and a small triangle at the base that gives it that upswept look. You have to glue the small triangle to the fin. They recommend placing it on wax paper to dry.
The other challenge is the payload section. It's a clear plastic tube about 4 inches long. On either side it is "plugged" by identical plastic pieces that have hooks cast into them. One attaches to the nosecone (and is glued to the nosecone) one attaches to the body and is glued to the payload section. You remove the nosecone to access you payload.
The plugs have holes in them where the hooks are cast. This means the bug you stick in there isn't going to die for lack of air. It also means you can't use ants, they'll get out. Medium ladybug is as small as you want to try. You could always seal the hole though. If you do get the hole in the plug that goes into the nosecone as well, or you'll never get them out.
The rocket comes with stickers which make it easy enough for the complex printing they show. Stickers on rockets are a mixed bag. They don't scratch off like the waterslide decals but they do peel off in flight sometimes..
One annoying thing about the payloader is the placement of the engine in relation to the fins. The engine hook sticks out below the level of the fins. This means you can't just sit the rocket on its fins and have it stand up. It will fall over. That's annoying.
Unlike other rockets of today the parachute attaches to the hook on the payload section vs the shock cord.
The rocket seems durable enough though. On one launch we had a failure where the shock cord broke and the payload section came down safely. The rest of the rocket plunged to earth like a dart and smacked into a tree. It got stuck there for a while before blowing down. The body had a bit of a crease in it next to the fin but it flew again then next time out.
While this rocket is rated to fly with a A8-3 it seems a bit iffy due to the weight. It doesn't really get enough altitude to comfortably open the chute, especially if you have cargo. A B6-4 is better suited for it.
